P0009 Code Engine Position System Trouble Performance Bank 2
The Engine Control Module (ECM) conducts tests to determine any misalignment between the camshafts and the crankshaft on one bank of the engine. The misalignment may occur at an idler sprocket on either bank or at the crankshaft. Once the ECM learns the position of both camshafts on one bank of the engine, it compares the learned values to a reference value. If both learned values for one bank of the engine exceed a calibrated threshold in the same direction, the ECM will set a DTC.
Illumination of the MIL (Malfunction Indicator Lamp)
Roughness while accelerating
Poor fuel economy
Decreased power
“Noise” from the timing chain
Potential Causes
The potential causes of a P0009 code may include:
Stretched timing chain
Movement of the crankshaft reluctor wheel, which is no longer referenced to top dead center (TDC)
Problem with the timing chain tensioner
Possible Solutions
Generally, diagnosing and fixing this DTC will involve inspecting the timing chains and tensioners for excessive wear or misalignment, as well as inspecting the crank reluctor wheel for proper positioning. Parts should be replaced as required. As mentioned earlier, there are known issues with some GM engines, so there may be updated or revised replacement parts available. For more specific troubleshooting steps based on your vehicle’s make and model, please refer to a factory service manual.
